Digital Publishing: Food For Thought On Traditional Journalism

admin | April 4th, 2010 - 5:45 am

As we have documented on several occasions the future of journalism and media is currently in transition and moving further away from traditional print and newspaper business models. We expect a big shift towards entrepreneurs who move to develop new ways of meeting consumer demand for information and engaging in public discourse. Consumers are also increasingly turning to the Internet for news and information (as opposed to newspapers) due to efficiency and accessibility – while advertisers are moving ads to online sites and scaling back on print ad buys. So, many are questioning how traditional journalism can survive and THRIVE in the future… and where it’s going to go?

The following three video’s published on the topic are a great starting point for developing your own conclusion, which will lead you to further investigations. We anticipate this to be a continuing discussion over the coming year as we ride this “paradigm” shift in current media business models.

If you are a publisher, we would dearly like to hear your thoughts on the future of journalism, in particular the future of digital publishing. Please comment and submit your thoughts below.

Much of the future of journalism is in the hands of citizen journalists. That’s why we’ve formed the National Association of Citizen Journalists. We believe John & Jan Doe citizens can be quite effective in producing hyper-local news – with a little training and mentoring. We’ve just written a 200+ page book for them, “Handbook for Citizen Journalists.” Would love to send you a complimentary copy (pdf) if you are interested.

Hi Ron, we certainly agree. We also believe that citizen journalists and journalists alike have a great opportunity to to use their skills, follow their passion, and build real time news and information portals on a whim as independent publishers – which in the end, will better serve their audience in a more efficent and accessable way. The challenge then becomes how do you best support these new media business models.. which is fast becoming our main focus moving forward with our recent opportunity just launched for journalists who wish to step out and accellerate this change, and their career. I look forward to checking out your report!
